The girl on the left is 17 and daughter of one of the church members that helped our group. Both mother and daughter did a lot of translating. The other girl is 10 and lives in a Mayan village. Because she knows both Spanish and Mayan, she spoke for us as we went from house to house delivering clothes and inviting people to the clinic at the school building. Her parents own the store behind her.
These kids are showing the craft project they made at vacation Bible school. They wear uniforms at school and this was taken in the afternoon. Most of the schools in Mexico meet only in the morning or end early in the afternoon.
This is a typical Mayan house. The flowers looked like plastic pointsetias. They are cool inside because the air can flow through the houses between the skinny tree trunks--that's what they're made of. Some people had plastered cement houses and others cement only on the bottom half.
A little 4-year-old girl came to the clinic with this wound on her forearm. The doctor diagnosed it as a parasite that lays eggs in the skin and when they hatch they eat flesh. We took up a special collection from our group to pay for the antibiotic she needed to get rid of it. If untreated she would eventually die.
These are are everyday dresses that the Mayan women wear. Many are hand embroidered and others are machine made. Notice that in the particular group all the colors and patterns are different. I priced some in the stores and they are about $80 and up. It was amazing how clean they were too.
